The modular design of the CS focuser makes it very versatile for any SCT. Just pick the options
you need in these 4 categories: Flange, Drawtube, Focus knob/motor, and Color. Scroll to the
bottom of this page to order.
We offer everything from single rate drive configurations to our standard dual rate 8 to 1 heavy duty tri-knob reduction unit for heavy loads (CCD imagers and bino viewers). We offer several different types of motor systems and PC based interfaces providing automated focus ability running today's ASCOM software. Plus different draw tube travels and configurations for every kind of EP, Bino viewer and CCD camera. We offer a new special flange/ drawtube configuration that holds a focal reducer inside the focuser for the ultimate image/focuser platform. Our shaft lock option provides focus lock with no image shift by securing the shaft (not pushing against the drawtube). Choose from many styles of non vignetting flanges so the focuser is permitting maximum light through put. Beautiful anodized colors and custom machining (by request) make for a perfect, one of a kind focuser, to match your SCT, Vixen, Tak Mewlon, Questar, and Astrotech RC scope.
MoonLite's new SCT focuser configuration for imaging uses a special design that allows a focal
reducer to be installed inside the focuser by threading it into the drawtube. The focuser is then
installed on to the visual back. The focal reducer travels with the drawtube as the focuser is
racked in and out providing the correct distance for imaging. This configuration requires one of
our 4 special flanges to be picked below, and a special .95" travel drawtube threaded just for
focal reducers. This style of focal reducer options will only work on SCTs that have the large 3
1/4" threaded visual back such as Meade 10" 12" 14" and Celestron's 11" and 14" scopes. We
also have a special 4" flange version for Meade's 16" visual back.
We now have a new (focal reducer) version for 8" and 9 1/4" SCTs that have the smaller 2" SCT
threaded visual back. We made a special 2-part split flange system to suport a focal reducer
installed inside the focuser. This special design allows it to fit on SCTs that have the smaller 2"
SCT threaded back. The installation procedure requires the user to remove the bottom rotating
flange part, then install the focal reducer by threading it in to the drawtube. The flange is then
reattached to the focuser and the focuser can then be installed on the scope.
Flanges:
MoonLite manufactures 16 different sizes of flanges for the CS model focuser that fit many different SCTs, plus Vixen, Tak Mewlon, Questar, and Astrotech RC telescopes. Please use the pull down menu to select the flange located at the bottom of this page. All flange options are free.
The flange attaches to the focuser body with 3 bolts and act as an interface between the SCT's
visual back and the main focuser body. The thickness of the flange is designed for the telescope it
is to be installed on. The flanges come in 3 thread sizes, 2" SCT thread for 8" and 9 1/4" scopes,
3 1/4" large thread for 10" ,12" and 14" scopes, plus a 4" thread size for Meade 16" SCTs. All
2-part flanges have a rotating ability with a lock knob providing camera angle adjustment plus
collimation adjustment ability.
There are a few category of flanges to consider (Low profile, Regular profile, and FR style). The
Low Profile ones are thin to present the lowest possible profile when mounted on an SCT. The
low profile flanges have the large 3 1/4" thread and use the .75" and .85 comp ring drawtubes.
The low profile 2" SCT thread flange (for 8" and 9 1/4" SCTs) is rotatable and can use either the
.90 travel or the .95" travel drawtube. The extra deep 2" SCT threaded flange uses the 1.5" travel
drawtube, while the new Focal reducer style 2" SCT threaded flange uses the .95" travel FR
drawtube. The regular profile 3 1/4" threaded flanges are rotatable and use the 1.15" travel comp
ring drawtube. The regular profile flange is ideal for visual users. The focal reducer style 3 1/4"
threaded flange is rotatable and tall. It uses a special drawtube with .95" travel that is threaded on
the bottom to supports a focal reducer. This combination is for imagers that need to use a focal
reducer. However the long 1.5" travel drawtube can be combined with the tall focal reducer
flange , but it would not allow a focal reducer to be used.
Remember Meade 8", Celestron 8", and Celestron 9 1/4" SCTs only have the smaller 2" SCT
threaded visual back. The large 3 1/4" flanges can not be used on these scopes that have the
smaller 2" SCT threaded back!
Please note: The focuser models designed for Focal reducers are intended for Imaging, it is
recommended that the focal reducer be removed from the focuser for Visual use. The design
places the focal reducer in the sweet spot distance from the focal reducer to the imaging system,
between 2 1/2" and 3 1/2". If a diagonal is used then the distance between the focal reducer and
an EP may be too great and traditional EPs may not come in to focus. A diagonal adds a few
inches to the image train.
- The newly designed Low profile rotatable 2" standard SCT threaded flange fits Meade 8" and
Celestron's 8" and 9 1/4" scopes. The best drawtube options are either the .75" travel, .90 travel
low brass comp ring version, or the .95" travel comp ring versions. Note the .95" travel FR comp
ring draw tube is the most popular drawtube for the 2" SCT threaded flange combination. This
flange is both rotatable and collimatable, it is a 2-part flange.
- The Low profile 3 1/4" large Meade thread flange fits 10", 12" , and 14" Meade SCTs. It is
not rotatable and not collimatable. The correct drawtube options for this flange are either the .75"
travel or the .85" travel comp ring versions. This flange is only recommended for the lowest of
profile requirements.
- The Low profile 3 1/4" large Celestron thread flange fits the 11" and 14" Celestron SCTs. It
is not rotatable and not collimatable. The correct drawtube options for this flange are either the
.75" travel or the .85" travel comp ring versions. This flange is only recommended for the lowest
of profile requirements.
- The Low profile 4" large Meade 16" thread flange fits the 16" Meade SCT only. It is not
rotatable and no collimatable. The correct drawtube options for this flange are either the .75"
travel or the .85" travel comp ring versions. This flange is only recommended for the lowest of
profile requirements.
- The Extra deep rotatable 2" standard threaded flange fits the Meade 8" and Clestrons 8" and
9 1/4" SCTs. It is also intended for RC scopes that have the 2" SCT threaded visual back
standard. The correct drawtube for this flange is the 1.5" travel comp ring one. The flange is
rotatable and collimatable, it is a 2 -part flange.
- The Regular profile 3 1/4" large Meade thread flange fits 10", 12" , and 14" Meade SCTs. It
is rotatable and collimatable. The correct drawtube for this flange is either the 1.15" travel comp
ring version or the .90 travel low brass comp ring version. The 1.15" comp ring drawtube is the
most popular pick for this flange. The flange is the newer 2- part style flange.
- The Regular profile 3 1/4" large Celestron thread flange fits the 11" and 14" Celestron SCTs.
It is rotatable. The correct drawtube for this flange is either the 1.15" travel comp ring version or
the .90 travel low brass comp ring version. The 1.15" comp ring drawtube is the most popular
pick for this flange. The flange is the newer 2- part style flange.
- Focal Reducer style 3 1/4" large Meade threaded flange fits the 10", 12" , and 14" Meade
SCTs. It is rotatable and collimatable. The correct drawtube for this flange is the .95" travel comp
ring drawtube threaded for focal reducers.
- Focal Reducer style 3 1/4" large Celestron threaded flange fits the 11" , and 14" Celestron
SCTs. It is rotatable and collimatable. The correct drawtube for this flange is the .95" travel comp
ring drawtube threaded for focal reducers.
- Focal Reducer style 4" large Meade 16" threaded flange fits the 16" Meade SCT. It is
rotatable and collimatable. The correct drawtube for this flange is the .95" travel comp ring
drawtube threaded for focal reducers.
- New Focal Reducer style 2" SCT thread flange for 8" and 9 1/4" SCTs. This is a 2 part flange
especially designed to split apart allowing the focuser reducer to be installed in side the focuser.
This flange is both rotatable and collimatable. The correct drawtube for this flange is the .95"
travel comp ring drawtube threaded for focal reducers.
- Special Vixen flange fits the VMC260. The correct drawtube for this flange is either the .90"
travel low brass comp ring version or the .95" travel comp ring version. It is rotatable and
collimatable.
- Special Questar flange fits the 7" Questar threaded back. It is rotatable. The correct drawtube
options are either the .75" travel or the .85" travel comp ring versions. It is rotatable and
collimatable.
- Special Tak Mewlon 300 flange fits the Mewlon 300 threaded back. It is rotatable. The
correct drawtube options are either the .75" travel or the .85" travel comp ring versions. It is
rotatable and collimatable.
- Special Tak Mewlon flange fits the 180, 210, 250, and 212 Mewlon threaded back. It is
rotatable. The correct drawtube options are either the .75" travel or the .85" travel comp ring
versions. It is rotatable and collimatable.
- Special Astrotech RC flange fits both the 8" and 10" RC threaded back. It is rotatable and collimatable. The correct drawtube option is the 1.5" travel Comp ring drawtube. This focuser threads on to the included spacer flanges that Astrotech provides to adjust the mounting position.
Please note: Fork mounted SCTs may have limited clearance with the focuser swung down into
the fork area. Please consider any clearance issues before picking a focuser flange.
Draw tubes:
MoonLite offers 7 different drawtube configurations for the CS model focusers. Please use the
pull down menu to select the drawtube located at the bottom of this page. Please Note - All
focusers include a 2" to 1 1/4" adapter. The 1 1/4" adapter is threaded on the bottom for 2" filters.
All drawtube options are free.
- .75" travel drawtube that uses an aluminum thumbscrew (non compression ring style). This
standard drawtube is a good choice for lightweight loads and has the lowest profile of all of the
drawtube options. For use with our "Low profile flanges only"
- .85" travel 3 thumbscrew brass comp ring drawtube. Ideal for heavy loads. For use with our
"Low profile flanges only"
- .90" travel "Low position brass comp ring drawtube". This drawtube also uses 3
thumbscrews for extreme grip like the model above but the brass compression ring is located in a
lower position so the brass compression ring clamps around the true 2" OD of diagonal, not the
beveled under cut. Some Diagonals such as AP, TV and WO brands have bevels back cut in to
the 2" OD barrel. This drawtube solves the misalignment problem and grips the diagonal
properly to maintain accurate collimation and load bearing ability. Please note- the "low
position" comp ring bump out on the top of the drawtube adds .8" to the height of the focuser.
This drawtube can not be used with a focal reducer ! So please pick the .95" travel one below if
you are configuring a focal reducer style focuser.
- .95" travel 3 thumbscrew brass compression ring focal reducer style drawtube. The drawtube
is threaded on the bottom to accept a focal reducer. This drawtube must be picked along with one
of the special focal reducer flanges such as the 3 1/4" threaded FR size for both Meade and
Celestron. They are a matched pair for the focal reducer configuration. This drawtube all so
works with the low 2" SCT threaded flange for 8" and 9 1/4" SCTs, you will just not be able to
install a focal reducer with the low profile flange. This drawtube also works with the new tall
focal reducer 2" SCT thread flange for 8" and 9 1/4" SCTs to allow a focal reducer to be used
with those model scopes having the smaller 2" SCT threaded visual back.
- 1.15" travel 3 thumbscrew brass comp ring drawtube. Ideal for heavy loads, Designed as the
best pick for visual use with our regular profile flanges. Provides good travel amount in a regular
profile package.
- New 1.15" travel 3 thumbscrew brass comp ring drawtube is threaded for a 2" AP
telecompressor. The matching flanges are any of the tall focal reducer style flanges. This
drawtube option is for customers that want to use the AP telecompressor instead of the Meade/
Celestron 6.3 and 3.3 focal reducers.
- 1.5" travel 3 thumbscrew brass comp ring drawtube. Extra long travel, primarily designed for
RC scopes with our "Extra deep flange option. However this lang travel drawtube can be used
with our tall 3 1/4" focal reducer flanges However this combo would provide no room for a
reducer to be installed.
Focus:
MoonLite has many knob and motor configurations. Our reduction systems and motor options
are integrated into the focuser at the time of assembly. It is important to pick the correct
configuration at the time of purchase as adding options, "such as a motor" requires sending the
focuser to us for the upgrade. Please use the pull down menu located at the bottom of this page to
select the configuration you need.
- The Single rate configuration uses 2 regular 1.5" diameter knobs providing .58" travel rate
per revolution. The single rate configuration is only recommended for light weight duty due to
the 3 lb vertical load capacity. Almost all MoonLite focusers are dual rate or motorized versions,
however we do offer this single rate model for smaller scopes that are not using heavy loads and
do not need a 2 speed unit.
- The Dual rate Tri-knob option is a 2 speed configuration using 1.5" knobs. The fine knob
uses an oversized 8 to 1 reduction unit featuring a preloaded, all ball bearing planetary reduction
design that has no backlash or play. The inline unit can simple be rolled by the slightest touch of
your finger to make very fine focus movements plus has an auto brake when focus is stopped. No
scope wiggles here and perfect collimation plus an 6 lb weight capacity make this option ideal for
typical visual or imaging use. The fine knob is on the right by default, but can be made a lefty if
needed.
- The Tri-knob with LOCK knob option adds the shaft lock system to the coarse side. The
shaft lock option uses a unique mini brass compression ring clamp sub system that allows the
user to lock the shaft with out deflecting the drawtube. This type of focus lock is much better
then the old "thumb screw against the draw tube" style that would shift the image when pressed
against the draw tube. The fine knob is on the right by default, but can be made a lefty if needed.
- The DC servo motor option provides fully adjustable speed control using the best hand
controller on the market today. Rigel Systems battery operated multi speed controller along with
our DC gear head motor system make a great combination for visual or imaging use. All motor
options give the focuser a 8 lb lifting capacity making it ideal fro heavy imaging configurations.
The DC servo motor can move in very small amounts suitable for imaging. See link below for
additional information.
- The High Resolution Stepper motor - "Stand alone option" provides extremely fine focus resolution required by today's high-end CCD imaging platforms. It provides a 8 lb load capacity once installed on a CS focuser. It gives the focuser great repeatability and automated focus ability for today's imaging requirements. The High Res Stepper motor features a rotatable mounting bracket, and a 9 pin DBA standard pin out so it will work with Robo focus controllers. It is Pin for Pin compatible with Robo focus controller. However we offer 2 different controllers in the next selection if you do not have an existing controller available. See Motor Focus link below for more information. Stand alone stepper motor option $190 (you provide the controller).
- The High Res Stepper motor with MoonLite mini controller includes a bare bones ASCOM Compliant Controller along with the Stepper motor. The MoonLite mini controller features temp compensation and all features of our high end controller, but does not have the Display or Manual buttons. You must use a PC to operate the stepper motor with this mini controller. It uses a USB connection to your PC and runs of standard 12 volt DC. We include a AC adadpter with all of the universal plugs so it will work in any country. The 8 lb load rating and precise focus ability make this a good configuration for permanent or remote imaging platforms. The lower cost of the controller $195 makes this a good pick if no manual buttons or display near the scope is needed. The stepper motor with mini controller option cost only $385. See Motor Focus link below for more information.
- High Resolution Stepper motor with MoonLite 2-speed DRO display controller is a high end fully ASCOM Compliant option. This new MoonLite controller is best for both Visual and PC operation due to its 2 speed buttons and full DRO display. It has a fine and fast set of buttons with a full DRO position read out on the display that shows the exact step count position just like in the software of your favorite imaging program. The controller has temp compensation, digital display for temp, position, voltage, operating modes, etc, plus manual buttons for stand alone use. This controller also offers both Serial and USB connectivity to your PC (will auto sense). The 8 lb load rating and extreme precise focus ability at .00008" resolution and repeatability make this the ultimate configuration for permanent or remote imaging platforms. This controller/ stepper motor option is recommended for both PC and hand held manual operation due to the controllers design. Comes with universal AC adapter and USB cable. See link below for more information on this new controller. Has built in support for MoonLite's optional flange rotation feature coming soon. The controller also has built in Blue tooth wireless remote support coming later this year. $685 for the Stepper motor and MoonLite 2-speed DRO display controller option.
